Lakshmi Ji

Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity, both material and spiritual, and the consort of Vishnu. She's one of the most widely worshipped goddesses in Hindu homes and businesses alike, invoked at the start of the financial year and during Diwali as much as at temple worship.

Shri is used almost interchangeably with her name, often paired as "Shri Lakshmi," and denotes auspiciousness and grace generally. Padma and Kamala both mean "lotus," her constant symbol. Vaikuntha Priya, "beloved of Vaikuntha" (Vishnu's heaven), ties her directly to him. The Ashtalakshmi tradition names eight distinct forms of her, each governing a different kind of wealth or blessing (grain, courage, progeny, and so on), not just financial fortune.

Shown seated or standing on a fully bloomed lotus, often with four arms: two holding lotuses, one in a blessing gesture (varada mudra), one sometimes pouring gold coins, signalling wealth flowing out to devotees rather than being hoarded. Elephants are frequently shown flanking her, pouring water from their trunks (the Gaja Lakshmi form), a symbol of royal legitimacy and abundance drawn from ancient Indian kingship imagery. Her colour is usually red or pink, and gold is closely associated with her throughout.

Lakshmi emerges from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), seated on a lotus, during the same event that produced the nectar of immortality, several other treasures, and the poison that Shiva swallows; she chooses Vishnu as her husband from among the assembled gods. She's said to accompany Vishnu through his avatars, taking her own matching form each time: as Sita alongside Rama, and as Rukmini (among others) alongside Krishna, rather than remaining a separate, untouched figure above the story. She's also associated with a certain restlessness in some tellings, moving on from those who become greedy or ungrateful, which is part of why devotional practice around her emphasises gratitude and right conduct, not just ritual invitation.

Wife of Vishnu, said to take a matching avatar form (Sita, Rukmini, and others) alongside each of his major descents. In some genealogies she's linked to the sage-born lineage that emerges from the churning of the ocean rather than an ordinary parentage.

She's invoked for wealth, prosperity and general wellbeing, most visibly during Diwali, when households clean and light their homes to welcome her in, and on Dhanteras and other new-year and harvest occasions when businesses open new account books in her name. Unlike some other goddesses, worship of her rarely carries a fierce or wrathful register, she is consistently gentle and benevolent across almost all her depictions.

Sri Vaishnavism, the South Indian tradition associated with the philosopher Ramanuja, gives her a formally elevated theological role: she is treated as an essential mediator between the devotee and Vishnu, not merely his consort, a position with real doctrinal weight in that school specifically. Elsewhere she is honoured more as the benevolent bringer of prosperity without that same mediating role being spelled out formally. Regional festival practice also varies considerably, in Bengal she is worshipped independently on Lakshmi Puja shortly after Durga Puja, while in western and northern India her Diwali worship is far more closely tied to the start of the business year.
