Lalita Tripurasundari Ji

Lalita Tripurasundari, "the beautiful one who plays across the three worlds," is the supreme goddess of the Srividya tradition within Shaktism, and is counted among the ten Mahavidyas, the great tantric wisdom-goddesses.

She is also called Shodashi, Kamakshi, and Rajarajeshvari, "empress of empresses." Her epithet Lalita, "she who plays," reflects the Srividya teaching that all creation, preservation and dissolution is itself the Goddess's play (lila).

She is depicted as radiantly beautiful, typically red-hued, seated on a lotus or on a throne resting on Shiva's reclining form, with four arms bearing a noose, a goad, a sugarcane bow and five flower arrows, emblems read as tools of attraction and control over the mind rather than weapons of war.

Within the Srikula branch of Shaktism she is honoured as the foremost of the Mahavidyas and the primary goddess of Srividya, worshipped in three linked forms: a radiant embodied (sthula) form, a subtle mantra form as the Srividya mantra, and a supreme geometric form as the Sri Chakra or Sri Yantra, through which her presence is meditated upon directly.

Regarded in Srikula theology as the supreme Devi herself, from whom other goddesses and gods, including Shiva in his form beneath her throne, are understood to derive; she is not treated as a subordinate consort within this tradition.

Her worship, centred on the Sri Chakra and the thousand-name hymn Lalita Sahasranama, is one of the most intellectually developed and initiatory branches of Shakta practice, historically transmitted through a guru lineage rather than open public temple ritual.

Srividya worship of her is practised across India but has particularly strong lineages in South India, where she is also identified with Kamakshi of Kanchipuram; practice and emphasis vary between different Srividya sampradayas.
