Santoshi Mata

Santoshi Mata, the "Mother of Contentment" (santosh), is a comparatively modern Hindu goddess who rose to nationwide devotion with remarkable speed after the 1975 film Jai Santoshi Maa. She is worshipped above all through a sixteen-Friday vow (vrat) for the fulfilment of wishes and the granting of a settled, contented heart.

Her name is itself her defining epithet: from santosh, contentment, she is the Mother who grants a satisfied heart rather than mere wealth. Devotees address her simply as Santoshi Maa.

She is depicted as a benign young goddess seated on a lotus, usually with a small number of hands holding a trident, a sword and vessels, in a form modelled on the established Mother-goddess iconography. Her worship is marked by its simplicity: the Friday offering is famously plain, jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana), and devotees strictly avoid anything sour on the fasting day.

Popular tradition, given its familiar shape by the 1975 film, makes her the mind-born daughter of Ganesha and his wives Riddhi and Siddhi, and the sister of Ganesha's sons Shubh and Labh, created in answer to the children's wish for a sister. The film's central story follows a devotee, Satyavati, whose faith and Friday vrat carry her through hardship, and it was this narrative, rather than any ancient scripture, that took the goddess into homes across India.

In the popular account she is the daughter of Ganesha; she has no significant presence in the classical Puranic pantheon. Her family tree is essentially the one dramatised in the twentieth century.

Her worship centres on the sixteen-Friday vrat and its katha, undertaken for contentment, harmony and the resolution of difficulties. Her appeal has been strongest among ordinary households, and especially women, drawn by an accessible, inexpensive form of devotion that promises peace of mind.

Santoshi Mata is a genuinely modern phenomenon, and honesty about that is part of respecting her: her rise is documented as a twentieth-century development amplified by cinema and popular print, not an ancient temple tradition. For that reason the specific wording of her vrat katha and songs is of recent, and in places contested or copyrighted, authorship, and this platform treats those texts with corresponding care.
