Karva Mata

Karva Mata is the folk name given to the goddess specifically invoked during Karva Chauth, the North Indian fast observed by married women for their husbands' long life, worshipped as a household form of the principal goddess honoured that day, Parvati.

She is worshipped interchangeably with, or as a household aspect of, Gaura and Chauth Mata, both themselves names for Parvati as invoked on this particular vrat; a temple to Chauth Mata also stands independently in Rajasthan.

She has no fixed sculpted temple image; on the vrat itself she is represented through a hand-drawn or printed image used in home worship, and through the karva, the small earthen pot that gives the festival its name, filled with wheat or rice and gifted as part of the ritual.

Her worship carries no single fixed Puranic narrative of her own; instead the day's devotion centres on Parvati's own steadfastness as Shiva's wife, retold through locally circulated Karva Chauth vrat kathas that model the ideal of marital devotion the fast itself enacts.

Understood as a form of Parvati (Gauri), invoked alongside Shiva and their son Kartikeya, both honoured together with her in the day's puja.

Karva Chauth, observed on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik, involves a dawn-to-moonrise fast broken only after sighting the moon; devotion to Karva Mata within it is centred on praying for a husband's health, safety and long life.

The observance, and the specific name Karva Mata for the day's goddess, is strongest in North India, particularly Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, with rituals and the wording of the katha varying by region and family tradition.
