Meaning

O daughter of the ocean, I remember You; grant me knowledge, wisdom and learning.

There is none as kind as You; in every way, fulfil our hope.

Hail, hail, O Mother of the world, Jagadamba; on You alone does everyone depend.

You dwell within every heart; this alone is our humble prayer.

Hail, O Mother of the world, daughter of the ocean; You are the benefactress of the humble.

I pray to You daily, O Great Queen; show grace, O Mother of the world, Bhavani.

How shall I sing Your praise? Overlook my faults and hear me.

Cast Your gracious gaze toward me; O Mother of the world, hear my prayer.

Hail, giver of knowledge, wisdom and joy; remove our troubles, O Mother.

When Vishnu churned the milky ocean, fourteen jewels were found within it.

Among those fourteen jewels You are the treasure of joy; You served the Lord, becoming His handmaid.

Whenever and wherever the Lord took birth, You too took a changed form to serve Him.

When Vishnu Himself took human form and descended in the city of Ayodhya,

then You too appeared in Janakpur; You served Him, Your heart filled with joy.

You made the Knower of all hearts Your own; Your fame is known throughout the three worlds.

No power can match You; how far can I go in describing Your greatness?

Whoever serves You in mind, deed and word, obtains the fruit their heart desires.

Casting aside deceit, guile and cunning, worship in every way with a devoted heart.

And let me explain further: whoever recites this with a devoted mind,

no trouble ever comes to them; they obtain the fruit their heart desires.

Save us, save us! Hail, remover of sorrow; destroyer of the threefold affliction and the bonds of worldly existence.

Whoever recites and shares this Chalisa, listens and lets others listen with attention,

no illness ever troubles them; they gain sons, wealth and prosperity.

Whoever is without sons, without wealth, blind, deaf, afflicted, or greatly distressed,

let them call a learned Brahmin and have this recited, never letting doubt enter their heart.

Let them have the Chalisa recited for forty days; upon them Shiva Himself shows His grace.

They obtain great happiness and prosperity; they suffer no lack of anything.

Whoever performs this worship for twelve months, none is as blessed as they.

Whoever recites this daily with a devoted heart, none in this world equals them.

In how many ways shall I sing Your praise? Test me, and observe with attention.

Whoever holds firm faith and keeps this vow, in their heart accomplishment and love arise.

Hail, hail, hail, O Great Queen Lakshmi, pervading all, the mine of virtue.

Your splendour is mighty throughout the world; none as compassionate as You is found anywhere.

Take heed of me now, an orphan; cut away my troubles and grant me devotion.

Forgive my errors and lapses; grant me Your sight, looking upon my state.

Without Your sight I, Your servant, am restless; I bear great sorrow, though blameless.

I have no knowledge or wisdom within me; You know it all in Your own mind.

Assume Your four-armed form; remove my troubles now.

In what way shall I sing Your praise? I have no abundance of knowledge or wisdom.

Ramdas now calls out and prays: take away all my adversity.
