Vishnu's Great Temples of India

Deity: Vishnu

Overview

This platform's Krishna/Braj, Jagannath Puri, and other Vishnu-avatar clusters cover many of India's most significant Vaishnava sites elsewhere; this overview brings together three of Vishnu's own "biggest" temples not otherwise covered: Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala (Andhra Pradesh), the world's most-visited and wealthiest Hindu temple; Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam (Tamil Nadu), the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world and foremost of the 108 Divya Desams; and Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), site of one of the largest documented religious treasure discoveries in modern history. This list reflects an editorial judgement about scale and national significance; it is not exhaustive of Vishnu's many other important temples across India.

History

Each of the three temples has its own distinct historical trajectory spanning well over a millennium, detailed on their individual pages, with continuous patronage from a succession of major South Indian and Kerala dynasties.

Spiritual Significance

All three sites are counted among the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred Vishnu temples honoured in the Tamil Alvar poet-saints' devotional canon, and two (Srirangam and Thiruvananthapuram) share the distinctive reclining-Vishnu (Ananta-shayana) iconographic form.
