Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala (Tirupati Balaji)

Written references consistent with the temple's significance appear as early as Tamil Sangam-era literature (the Tolkappiyam, roughly 1st-4th century CE, and the Silappathikaram, roughly 5th-6th century CE), and Puranic accounts of the first millennium describe the temple's founding legend involving a King Tondaman, who is said to have excavated a termite mound to find a self-manifested Vishnu shrine beneath it. Over the following centuries the temple received substantial patronage from major South Indian dynasties, including the Pallavas, Cholas, and Chalukyas, and later the Vijayanagara Empire, progressively building the temple's wealth, architecture, and administrative structure into the institution seen today.

Suitable for families, but the scale of crowds and the length of darshan queues (which can run many hours) should be planned for carefully with young children or elderly travellers; TTD offers several tiered darshan options with differing wait times.
