Hanuman Ji

Hanuman is the monkey-god of the Ramayana, Rama's most devoted follower, and a widely worshipped deity in his own right, celebrated for strength, courage, celibate discipline, and total, unwavering devotion (bhakti).

Anjaneya and Anjaniputra both mark him as the son of the celestial nymph Anjana. Pavanputra ("son of the wind god") points to his divine, non-ordinary parentage. Bajrangbali ("one with limbs strong as a thunderbolt") is an especially common devotional name in North India, and Maruti is another widely used variant tied to the wind god Vayu/Maruti.

Shown as a muscular figure with a monkey's face and a long tail, often mid-flight or in a devotional pose, hands folded before Rama. He's frequently pictured tearing open his own chest to reveal Rama and Sita enshrined in his heart, a direct visual statement of the devotion he represents rather than a narrative episode as such. He carries a mace (gada) and, in a widespread and dramatic depiction, is shown carrying an entire mountain, the Sanjeevani hill, in one hand.

A gifted, powerful child prone to mischief, young Hanuman once leapt for the sun mistaking it for a fruit, an act that led the god Indra to strike him down and, in most versions, prompted his father Vayu to briefly withdraw his breath from the world in anger, until the gods intervened with blessings that gave Hanuman his great strength and near-invulnerability. As an adult he serves the monkey-king Sugriva, and it's Hanuman who finds the abducted Sita in Lanka, delivering Rama's ring to her as proof of rescue to come, then, famously, allows himself to be captured and set alight by Ravana's men, only to use his own burning tail to set fire to the city. During the war's most desperate hour, when Lakshmana is gravely wounded, Hanuman flies to the Himalayas and, unable to identify the single healing herb needed, carries the entire Sanjeevani mountain back to the battlefield rather than risk delay. Throughout, his defining trait isn't his strength so much as what he does with it: total, unhesitating service to Rama, expecting nothing in return.

Son of Anjana and the wind god Vayu. He has no consort in the main tradition, his celibacy (as a brahmachari) is itself a defining and widely celebrated part of his character, tied closely to the discipline and single-minded devotion he represents.

Hanuman is invoked for protection, strength, and the removal of obstacles and fear, the Hanuman Chalisa, a 16th-century devotional hymn attributed to Tulsidas, is among the most widely recited texts in Hindu practice today, well beyond dedicated Hanuman worship. He's held up as the ideal devotee, the standard against which selfless service and loyalty are measured, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are widely observed as days particularly associated with his worship.

Hanuman worship is remarkably consistent in tone across India compared to some other deities on this list, reverence for his strength and devotion holds fairly steady region to region, though regional Ramayana traditions do vary his prominence and detail. Outside India, Southeast Asian retellings give him a considerably larger and more independent role, Thailand's Ramakien in particular develops Hanuman into a far more central, even romantically involved, character than the main Sanskrit tradition allows, which is a genuinely different portrayal, not just a stylistic variation.
