Overview
Nangli Sahib, also called Nangli Tirath or Nangli Dham, in Nangli village near Sakoti Tanda, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, is the samadhi (memorial shrine) of Satguru Swami Swarupanand Ji Maharaj (1884-1936), a guru of the Paramhans Advait Mat lineage, popularly revered here as "Nangli Niwasi Bhagwan" and "Hari Har Baba." History
Swami Swarupanand Ji was born Beli Ram on 1 February 1884 in Teri, Kohat district (in present-day Pakistan), into a Vasudeva family. He was initiated into sannyasa in the early 1900s by Paramhans Swami Advaitanand Ji, who gave him the name Swarupanand. During his teacher's lifetime and after, Swarupanand Ji established an order of renunciate monks across northern India and founded numerous ashrams to disseminate his guru's teachings. He died on 9 April 1936 in Nangli village, by which time he had, according to available sources, more than 10,000 followers and over 300 affiliated ashrams across northern India. His samadhi at Nangli subsequently became the central pilgrimage site of the tradition he founded, drawing devotees from across India.
Spiritual Significance
One of Swarupanand Ji's own disciples, Hans Ji Maharaj, went on to found the Divine Light Mission, a further Sant Mat-lineage movement with its own substantial 20th-century following, giving Nangli Sahib an documented place within a wider genealogy of modern North Indian guru traditions extending well beyond the site itself. The approach road from the main highway to the shrine traditionally has 84 turns, symbolically representing liberation (mukti) from the cycle of the 84 lakh yonis (the traditional count of life-forms through which a soul is believed to transmigrate before liberation), a devotional detail specific to this site.
