Hanuman Garhi

Devotional tradition, drawing on the Skanda Purana, attributes an original temple at this site to King Vikramaditya, alongside 360 other temples said to have been built across Ayodhya during the same era — a tradition, like similar Vikramaditya-era attributions at Kanak Bhawan and Treta Ke Thakur, that should be understood as devotional and regional historical tradition rather than independently verified archaeological fact. Some accounts describe the temple being destroyed and a mosque built in its place under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb; the temple's precise history through the following centuries is disputed and unevenly documented across different sources. The temple as it broadly appears today is dated to 1799 CE, built under the supervision of Diwan Tikait Rai during the rule of Asaf-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Awadh.

Mythologically, the site is associated with the tradition that Hanuman took up residence in a cave here to protect Ramkot (the fortified area understood to be Rama's own citadel) after returning to Ayodhya following the defeat of Ravana — establishing Hanuman's enduring role as the guardian of the city.

Hanuman Garhi's status as Ayodhya's traditional "first stop" for pilgrims, visited before the Ram Mandir itself, reflects Hanuman's role as protector and gatekeeper of the city in devotional practice — seeking his blessing and permission, in effect, before proceeding to Rama's own birthplace. This sequencing is a well-established local pilgrimage custom rather than a formal religious requirement.

The Vikramaditya-era founding attribution draws on the Skanda Purana. Hanuman's guardianship of Ramkot following the Ramayana's events is documented primarily in regional devotional tradition rather than a specific citable verse in the Ramayana itself; this should be treated as popular tradition pending expert verification.

When to visit: October to March offers the most comfortable weather.

Getting there: Located within Ayodhya's Ramkot area, easily reached by road from anywhere in the city; commonly visited as the first stop before the nearby Ram Mandir.

Well suited to families of all ages; the 76-step climb within the fort structure is manageable for most visitors, though those with mobility limitations should plan accordingly.
