Overview
Apatsahayeswarar Temple in Alangudi, Thiruvarur district, is the fifth of the Navagraha Sthalams, dedicated to Shiva worshipped here as Apatsahayeswarar ("Lord who helps in times of distress"), with Guru (Brihaspati, Jupiter) enshrined as the temple's specific planetary association.
History
The original temple complex is thought to have been built by the Chola dynasty, with the present masonry structure attributed to the Nayaks of Thanjavur in the 16th century. The temple is mentioned in the 7th-century devotional hymns of the Nayanmar saint Tirugnana Sambandar, giving it Paadal Petra Sthalam status, one of 275 temples praised in Saiva devotional literature.
Spiritual Significance
Guru (Brihaspati), the guru of the gods and considered the most benefic planet in Hindu astrology, is understood to govern wisdom, wealth, faith, and dharma. The temple's name, "Lord who helps in times of distress," directly reflects Jupiter's traditional protective and beneficial astrological character.
