Overview
At Dondra Head, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Counted among the Pancha Ishwarams under the name Tondeswaram, and before its destruction one of the most celebrated and wealthy pilgrimage centres in the pre-colonial island.
History
The complex is traced to the period of King Dappula I, and rediscovered images and ruins are dated stylistically to around the fifth to seventh centuries CE. Destroyed by Portuguese forces under Thome de Sousa d'Arronches. Sources give either February 1588 or 1587; the disagreement is recorded rather than resolved.
Spiritual Significance
An important correction sits at the centre of this site. Although its name places it among the five Shiva temples, its principal historical deity was Vishnu as Upulvan, not Shiva. The Pancha Ishwaram grouping and the temple's actual devotional history do not line up, and this platform records that rather than smoothing it over.

Pilgrimage Information
Current status: Rebuilt. A Vishnu temple, the Devinuwara Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, operates today alongside a Buddhist vihara on the site. Shared with other communities. Shared today between Hindu Vishnu devotion and Sinhala Buddhist practice, with a vihara on the same ground. Check festival dates and local conditions close to the date of travel.
