Munneswaram Temple, Chilaw

Sources place the temple's existence at least from around 1000 CE. The source itself notes that the historical evidence favours that dating over the epic-age association. First destroyed in 1578, with Jesuit records describing iron bars used to break the presiding image. Rebuilt under King Rajasinghe I.

Two distinct claims sit here. The devotional one ties the temple to Rama and the Ramayana. The documented one is different and in some ways more interesting: the temple was issuing its own coins by the eleventh century, which tells you it was an institution of real economic weight. Its Kali shrine today draws a large Sinhala Buddhist majority, recorded at over 78 per cent of pilgrims.

Current status: Active, run by a temple trust. Shared with other communities. Explicitly shared. The Kali shrine is very popular with Sinhala Buddhists, who form the large majority of pilgrims to both shrines. The page describes it as it is rather than as an exclusively Tamil Hindu site.
