Koneswaram Temple, Trincomalee

The traditional and attested dates are more than a thousand years apart, and the platform keeps them apart. The Konesar Kalvettu, the temple's own inscriptional tradition, places its founding around 1580 BCE. Archaeology describes something quite different: a Sangam-period rock-cave and brick-shrine phase, with documented history from about 300 CE. Destroyed on 14 April 1622, the Tamil New Year, by the Portuguese governor Constantino de Sa de Noronha, whose soldiers are recorded as having entered disguised as Iyer priests during a festival. Rebuilt in the twentieth century after images were recovered from the sea in the 1950s.

Koneswaram is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, one of the 275 Shiva shrines sung in the Tevaram, glorified by the sixth-century Nayanar saint Sambandar and the eighth-century Sundarar. That canonical status places it inside the Tamil Shaiva devotional tradition rather than merely beside it, and it was historically among the wealthiest temples in the region. The Shankari Devi Shakti Peetha, covered separately on this platform, stands as a shrine within this same compound.
