Overview
One of the five Pancha Ishwarams, beside the ancient Tamil trading port of Manthottam (Mahatittha) near Mannar. Also called Thiruketheeswaram.
History
The historian Paul Peiris is quoted describing it as one of five Ishwarams existing long before the arrival of Vijaya around 600 BCE. That is a traditional framing rather than an excavated date. Sources disagree on the date. One account has the Portuguese destroying it after 1505, with its stone reused to build Mannar Fort in 1589; another gives a different date. The disagreement is recorded here rather than resolved.
Spiritual Significance
A Paadal Petra Sthalam sung by Sambandar and Sundarar, which gives it canonical standing in the Tamil Shaiva tradition. Its position beside one of the island's great ancient ports gives it archaeological importance as well as devotional: this was a temple on a trade route, not an isolated shrine.

Pilgrimage Information
Current status: Active and restored. The Sri Lankan Army occupied the temple and the surrounding area from August 1990, and a restoration society has worked on the site since.
