Overview
A natural limestone cave between the Dudh Koshi and Sun Kosi rivers, called the Pashupatinath of eastern Nepal, and shared simultaneously by three distinct traditions.
History
The Hindu dating is frankly mythic: Shiva is said to have hidden here for six thousand years. No specific Purana is named in any source consulted, and no historical dating was found. Not a built temple but a natural cave, roughly circular, about 193 feet across and extending 67 feet below the surface.
Spiritual Significance
The sharing is what makes Halesi unusual even by Himalayan standards. Hindus venerate it as the cave where Shiva hid from the demon Bhasmasura. Vajrayana Buddhists hold it to be where Padmasambhava and Mandarava attained longevity. The indigenous Kirat Rai revere it in connection with the ancestor-deity Raechhakule and King Halesung. Three religious histories, one cave, no dispute recorded.
