Overview
At the confluence of the Koka and Sapta-Koshi rivers, northwest of Dharan. One of the Char Dham of Nepal, and a complex of nine interconnected shrines rather than a single temple.
History
Statues and artefacts found at the site are reported as more than 1,500 years old, cited by two independent sources as evidence of long continuous use. The textual attestation and the archaeology point the same way here, which is uncommon. Nine interconnected shrines dedicated to forms of Varaha and to associated deities.
Spiritual Significance
This has the strongest textual pedigree of any site in this group. It is named and described in the Brahma Purana, the Varaha Purana and the Skanda Purana, and glorified in the Mahabharata. Where most Nepali temple traditions rest on local legend, Baraha Kshetra sits inside the pan-Indian Puranic geography by name.
