Overview

History
According to legend, Shiva manifested here as a self-formed (self-manifested) linga beneath a tall deodar tree, the local term for which, "tadka," is said to give the temple its name. Tradition holds that the demon Tarakasura meditated and worshipped Shiva at this location seeking a boon of invincibility, which Shiva granted with the sole exception of Shiva's own son; Kartikeya, Shiva and Parvati's son, subsequently fought and killed Tarakasura on this same hilltop. Shiva is said to have then attached his own name to the site where Tarakasura had performed his penance, giving rise to the temple's present name and its promise of continued worship through the present age (Kali Yuga).
Spiritual Significance
The temple's sanctum houses a black stone Shivalinga, roughly two feet high, regarded as self-manifested rather than installed. Built in traditional Garhwal architectural style using slate, stone, and wood, the temple is one of the more visited spiritual sites in this part of the Garhwal region, particularly around Maha Shivratri.
