Nageshwarnath Temple, Ayodhya

Deity: Shiva (Nageshwarnath, Lord of Serpents) · Best: October, November, December, January, February, March

Overview

Nageshwarnath Temple, at Ram Ki Paidi on the banks of the Saryu River in Ayodhya, is a Shiva temple traditionally held to be among the oldest in the city, with its establishment attributed to Kush, one of Rama's twin sons, tracing the site's devotional origins back to the Treta Yuga in Hindu cosmological tradition. Unlike most of Ayodhya's major temples, which centre on Rama or Hanuman, Nageshwarnath is distinctly Shaivite, adding a further dimension to the city's temple landscape.

History

According to the temple's founding legend, Kush lost an armlet while bathing in the Saryu River; the armlet was recovered by a Nag-Kanya (a serpent maiden) who subsequently fell in love with him. As she was herself a devotee of Shiva, Kush is said to have built this temple in her honour, giving the site its name (Nageshwarnath, "Lord of Serpents," referencing the Naga/serpent association of the legend). Tradition holds that the temple remained in reasonably good condition through to the era of King Vikramaditya, the legendary Ujjain ruler credited with temple-building activity at several sites across Ayodhya. The present temple structure is dated to 1750 CE, built under the sponsorship of Naval Rai, a minister serving under Safdar Jung.

Spiritual Significance

As one of the few prominent Shaivite sites within an otherwise strongly Vaishnava pilgrimage city, Nageshwarnath offers Ayodhya's pilgrims a distinct devotional experience alongside the city's Rama-centred temples. The temple's Maha Shivaratri celebrations are particularly significant locally, featuring a Shiv Barat procession that draws large numbers of devotees.

Scriptures & Texts

Editorial note: Scripture references below are based on widely cited scholarly and traditional sources. Specific verse citations should be independently verified before publication.

The Kush/Nag-Kanya founding legend is documented primarily through regional devotional tradition specific to Ayodhya rather than a citable verse in the Ramayana itself, which does not detail Kush's life in Ayodhya at this level of specificity. Specific verse-level citation requires expert verification before publication.
