Mallikarjuna Temple, Srisailam

Deity: Shiva (Mallikarjuna) and Parvati (Bhramaramba) · Best: October, November, December, January, February

Overview

The Mallikarjuna Temple at Srisailam, in Andhra Pradesh's Nandyal district, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and, unusually, simultaneously one of the 52 Shakti Peethas associated with the goddess — making it sacred to both Shaivite and Shakta traditions at the same site. Shiva is worshipped here as Mallikarjuna and Parvati as Bhramaramba. The temple stands on the Nallamala hills above the Krishna River.

History

Tradition holds that Shiva and Parvati travelled to Srisailam to comfort their son Kartikeya, who had left Mount Kailash upset after Ganesha's marriage. Shiva is said to have manifested here as Mallikarjuna and Parvati as Bhramaramba so as to remain near their son without directly overriding his wish for solitude. A further tradition holds that Shiva appears here as "Arjuna" on the new moon (Amavasya) and Parvati as "Mallika" on the full moon (Poornima), giving the site its combined name.

The temple received patronage across many centuries and dynasties, including the Satavahanas (2nd century CE), the Chalukyas, the Kakatiyas, and the Vijayanagara emperors, with the core shrine dated to around the 7th century and substantial expansion under later rulers. The complex's fortress-like outer walls and four gopurams (temple towers) reflect this long history of successive royal patronage and expansion.

Spiritual Significance

Srisailam's dual status as both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha gives it a distinctive place in Hindu pilgrimage — a rare site where the Shaivite and Shakta traditions converge in a single, continuously active temple complex. The site also contains a Sahasra Linga (a shrine with a thousand small lingams), traditionally attributed to Rama, and five further lingams traditionally attributed to the Pandavas, adding further devotional layers to the complex.

Pilgrimage Information

When to visit: October to February offers the most comfortable weather for the forest drive and temple visit; summer (March–June) can be very hot, and the monsoon brings heavy rain to the Nallamala forest region.

Getting there: Srisailam is reached by road from Hyderabad (approximately 210 km) or Kurnool, via winding ghat roads through the Nallamala forest and the Srisailam Tiger Reserve. The nearest railway stations with fuller connectivity are at Kurnool or Markapur Road, with onward road travel required.

Family Suitability

✓ Family friendly

Suitable for families of all ages; the temple itself requires no trekking, though the approach drive through hill and forest terrain should be planned for comfort on winding roads.

Accommodation

Srisailam town has a range of guesthouses, including those run by the temple's devasthanam (temple trust) and the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, alongside private hotels serving the pilgrimage trade.

Local Services

Srisailam has food, basic medical facilities, and reasonable mobile connectivity as an established pilgrimage town, though services are more limited than in major cities given its forest-hill setting.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do

  • Plan the ghat-road drive with adequate daylight, given the winding mountain terrain.
  • Visit both the Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba shrines, given the site's dual Jyotirlinga/Shakti Peetha significance.
  • Check current darshan timings and any special queue arrangements before travelling, especially around major festivals.

Don’t

  • Don't attempt the ghat-road drive at night without local knowledge of the route.
  • Don't disturb wildlife in the surrounding Srisailam Tiger Reserve.

Nearby Sacred Locations

  • Srisailam Dam

Major dam on the Krishna River near the temple town.

  • Sahasra Linga shrine

Within the temple complex; traditionally attributed to Rama.

Preservation

The temple's location within the Nallamala forest and the Srisailam Tiger Reserve brings it into direct proximity with an active wildlife conservation area, requiring particular care from pilgrims and tourism operators regarding waste and vehicle traffic on the approach roads.

Giving Back

Support the temple through its official devasthanam donation channels, and use registered local transport and guides for the forest approach roads rather than informal operators.
