Overview
ISKCON Vrindavan's Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, in the Raman Reti area of Vrindavan, was the first temple built in India by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Dedicated to Krishna and his brother Balaram, the temple represents a comparatively recent addition to Vrindavan's temple landscape (opened 1975) but has become one of the town's most visited sites, drawing large numbers of both Indian and international devotees.
History
Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON's founder-acharya, had long envisioned building a temple of exceptional beauty for Krishna and Balaram in the very village where the two brothers are traditionally said to have played more than five thousand years ago. Prabhupada, whose own guru Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami had instructed him to spread Krishna consciousness to the English-speaking West, travelled to the United States in 1965 and subsequently founded ISKCON there before returning to oversee construction of this temple in Vrindavan, personally directing its design and construction. The temple opened during the Ram Navami festival on 20 April 1975.
Spiritual Significance
As ISKCON's first Indian temple, Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir holds particular significance within the global ISKCON movement as a kind of spiritual homecoming — a Western-founded but authentically Vrindavan- rooted institution bringing large numbers of international devotees into direct contact with Braj's own devotional landscape. The temple complex also includes Srila Prabhupada's own samadhi (memorial shrine), a significant pilgrimage point for ISKCON devotees specifically.

Krishna and Balaram's shared childhood in Vrindavan is described in the Bhagavata Purana's tenth canto and the Harivamsa.
