Meaning

Victory to the delight of the Yadus, victory to the world's salutation; victory to Vasudeva and Devaki's son.

Victory to the son of Yashoda, darling of Nanda; victory, O Lord, the apple of your devotees' eyes.

Victory to the clever charmer, subduer of the serpent; Krishna Kanhaiya, herder of cows.

Again, upon a fingernail, O Lord, you held up the great mountain; come, remove the suffering of the humble.

The sweet flute rests upon your lips; may my heartfelt wish come to fulfillment.

Come, Hari, once more taste the butter; today preserve the honour of Bharat (India).

Round cheeks, a reddish chin; a gentle, enchanting smile spreads across it.

Wide eyes tinged with red-lotus hue; a peacock-feather crown and a garland of Vaijayanti.

Earrings adorn his ears, a yellow silk garment; at his waist small bells tied on a girdle.

His beautiful body dark as a fresh lotus; seeing his radiance, gods, men and sages are enchanted.

A tilak on his forehead, curly locks of hair; come, O Krishna, holder of the flute.

Drinking her milk, you liberated Putana; you slew the demons Aghasura and Bakasura.

When the fire blazed in the Madhuvana forest, it turned cool the moment Nandalala looked upon it.

When the lord of the gods, in fury, attacked Braja; he sent down a torrent of hailstones.

When Braja was about to be swept away by the flood, you saved it by lifting Govardhan on a fingernail.

Seeing this, Yashoda's mind grew ever more perplexed; within your mouth he showed her all fourteen worlds.

The wicked Kansa caused great mischief, when he had ten million lotuses fetched.

You then subdued the serpent Kaliya; giving him the mark of your foot, you made him fearless.

Sporting the Rasa dance together with the Gopis, you fulfilled the deepest desire of them all.

You destroyed many great demons; you seized Kansa by the hair and killed him.

You freed your parents from prison; you gave the kingdom back to Ugrasena.

You brought back her six dead sons from the earth; you removed Mother Devaki's sorrow.

You destroyed the demons Bhaumasura and Mura; you brought sixteen thousand princesses to safety.

Giving them a grass-blade's shelter, you honoured Draupadi's cry for help; you slew Jarasandha the demon.

You slew demons like Bakasura and others; you removed the sufferings of your devotees.

You removed the sorrow of poor Sudama; you accepted his gift of three fistfuls of rice.

You sought a meal of love-cooked greens at Vidura's home; you rejected the delicacies offered by Duryodhana.

Seeing the great weight love carries, thus does Shyam favour the humble.

You drove the chariot of Partha (Arjuna) in the Bharat war; taking up the discus, you cared nothing for its weight.

You spoke the wisdom of your own Gita; you rained nectar upon your devotees' hearts.

Mira was intoxicated so, that she drank poison while clapping her hands.

The king sent a snake in a basket; you turned it into a Shaligrama idol, O Banwari.

You showed your Maya to the Creator himself; you removed every doubt from his heart.

When he then reviled you a hundred times, Shishupala was instantly set free in life.

When Draupadi cried out for help, saying, "O protector of the wretched, my honour departs now,"

at once Nandalala became the cloth, extending the sari as the enemy's face turned black.

Such a lord over lords is Kanhaiya; he saves the boat when it sinks in the whirlpool.

Sundardas, holding hope within his heart: cast your compassionate glance, O Banwari.

O Lord, remove all my ill counsel; forgive quickly whatever offence is mine.

Open the curtain, grant me your vision now; proclaim victory to Krishna Kanhaiya.
