Overview
This entry is a sacred image rather than a building. A marble Ganesha found at Gardez in Paktia, inscribed and royally dedicated, now the central object of worship at a Hindu mandir in Kabul.
History
Scholarly dating is contested. D. C. Sircar dated it to the sixth or seventh century CE on palaeographic grounds; other readings differ. The disagreement is recorded rather than resolved.
Spiritual Significance
The inscription is what makes it exceptional. It names the dedicating king as Sri Shahi Khingala and calls the image Maha Vinayaka, which gives direct evidence of organised Hindu worship under royal patronage in pre-Islamic eastern Afghanistan. Very little else from that world survives with its own words attached.

Pilgrimage Information
Current status: Still worshipped, in a Kabul mandir that sources name inconsistently, variously as the Rattan Nath temple or Dargah Pir Rattan Nath. Reporting from August 2021 described it as the last functioning Hindu temple in the city. This is not a pilgrimage destination. Afghanistan is not open to devotional travel, and this page exists as a record of religious history rather than as an invitation to visit. Nothing here should be read as travel guidance.
