Meaning
Victory, victory, victory to Ganapati, lord of the ganas! Worker of good, doer of every auspicious task!
Victory, elephant-faced one, abode of joy; Vinayaka of the universe, dispenser of wisdom!
Curved trunk, pure and pleasing shoulders; the tilak's triple mark charms the mind on his forehead.
A garland of jewels and pearls shines upon his chest; a golden crown on his head, and his eyes are wide.
A book, an axe and a trident in his hands; sweets and fragrant flowers as his offering.
Beautiful yellow robes adorn his body; sandals on his feet delight the minds of sages.
Blessed son of Shiva, brother of the six-faced one; darling of Gauri, renowned throughout the world.
Riddhi and Siddhi wave the fan before you; the mouse, your vehicle, adorns the doorway.
Let me tell your holy story now; utterly pure, sacred, and full of blessing.
Once, the daughter of the mountain king performed great austerity, desiring a son.
When her incomparable yajna was complete, you came to her disguised as a Brahmin.
Recognizing you as her guest, Gauri was overjoyed; she served you in many ways.
Deeply pleased, you granted a boon — the fruit of her austerity, undertaken for a son.
You shall have a son of great wisdom — without conceiving him, at this very time.
The lord of the ganas, treasury of virtue and wisdom — worshipped as the first form of God.
So saying, you vanished from sight; and appeared as a child on her lap.
Taking the form of a babe you began to cry; seeing that face, Gauri's joy knew no equal.
Everyone rejoiced, singing songs of joyous blessing; from the sky, celestials showered flowers.
Shambhu and Uma gave lavish gifts; gods and sages came to see the child.
Seeing such immense joy and festive celebration, King Shani too came to see.
Mindful of his own flaw in his heart, Shani did not wish to look upon the child.
Girija, misreading his mind, took some offence: 'Is it that my celebration displeases you, Shani?'
Shani, hesitating, spoke with an uneasy mind: 'What will happen if I look upon your child?'
Uma's heart held no belief in this; she asked Shani to look upon the child.
The moment Shani's sidelong glance fell upon him, the child's head flew off into the sky.
Girija fell to the ground, distraught; that sorrowful state cannot be described.
A great outcry arose upon Kailasha; Shani, seeing this, had destroyed the son.
At once Vishnu rode Garuda to the scene; he cut off an elephant's head with his discus.
This they placed upon the body of the child; reciting the mantra of life, Shankara set it there.
Shambhu then gave him the name Ganesha; and granted him the boon of being the treasure of wisdom.
When Shiva tested his wisdom, he set the task of circling the whole earth.
Kartikeya, the six-faced one, set off at once, wandering and losing his way; Ganesha sat and devised a plan.
You held the feet of your mother and father, and circled them seven times.
'Blessed is Ganesha' Shiva declared, his heart rejoicing; from the sky the celestials rained down flowers in abundance.
Your glory and greatness of wisdom, even thousand-mouthed Shesha cannot sing in full.
I am foolish, impure and afflicted; how then shall I express my prayer to you?
Ramasundar, the servant of the Lord, worships you, as do the world at Prayaga, Kakara and Durvasa.
Now, O Lord, show mercy upon this humble one; grant me some measure of your power and devotion.
