Overview
Bakreshwar Temple, on the banks of the Paaphra river in Birbhum district, West Bengal, is one of the classical 51 Shakti Peethas and, by several accounts, one of the most powerful among West Bengal's unusually dense cluster of thirteen such sites. It marks the spot where the portion of Sati's forehead between her eyebrows fell, said to represent the goddess's "mind." The presiding image, Mahishmardini (destroyer of the demon Mahishasura), is protected by the Bhairava Vakranath.
History
While devotional tradition holds the site sacred since ancient times, the temple's present structure dates to 1761 CE, when it was rebuilt by King Darpanarayan, a patron also associated with the nearby Kiriteswari Temple's 19th-century reconstruction.
Spiritual Significance
Bakreshwar is also known for its cluster of natural hot springs, giving the site a distinctive combination of Shakta pilgrimage and thermal bathing tradition uncommon among this platform's other Shakti Peethas.
