Meaning
Salutations, salutations to Durga, giver of happiness; salutations, salutations to Ambe, remover of sorrow.
Formless is your light; it spreads its brightness across the three worlds.
The moon crowns your forehead, your face vast and great; your eyes red, your brows fierce.
The Mother's form is exceedingly lovely; those who behold it find the greatest joy.
You dissolve the power of the world at the end of time; for its sustenance you gave grain and wealth.
As Annapurna you nourished the world; you alone are the primal, beautiful maiden.
At the time of dissolution you destroy all things; you, Gauri, are dear to Shiva Shankara.
Shiva and the yogis sing your virtues; Brahma and Vishnu ever meditate upon you.
You took on the form of Saraswati; giving good wisdom you saved the sages and seers.
As Amba you took the form of Narasimha; you appeared bursting forth from the pillar.
Protecting Prahlada, you saved him; you sent Hiranyakashipu to his end.
As Lakshmi you took form in this world; you dwell within the body of Shri Narayana.
You take your delight in the ocean of milk; ocean of compassion, grant the wish of my heart.
In Hinglaj you are Bhavani yourself; your boundless glory cannot be told.
Matangi and Mother Dhumavati, Bhuvaneshvari, Bagala who gives joy —
Shri Bhairavi, Tara, who ferries the world across; Chhinnamasta, remover of worldly pain.
Bhavani shines mounted upon her lion; the valiant Langur strides ahead to lead her.
In her hands rest the skull-bowl and the sword; at the sight of them even Time takes fright.
Her weapon, the trident, gleam upon her; the mere sight of them pierces the hearts of foes.
In ten million cities you yourself abide; in the three worlds your drum of victory sounds.
You slew the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha; you destroyed Raktabija and his kind.
Mahishasura, an exceedingly proud king, under whose sin's weight the earth grew distressed —
you took the terrible form of Kalika, and along with his army destroyed him.
Whenever great distress has fallen upon your saints, you, Mother, have always come to their aid.
In the city of the immortals and Indra's realm, your glory remains ever unfading.
In the sacrificial fire is your light; men and women worship you always.
Whoever sings your praise with loving devotion, sorrow and poverty come not near them.
Whoever meditates upon you with a fixed mind, their cycle of birth and death is broken.
Yogis, gods and sages proclaim aloud: without your Shakti, no yoga can succeed.
Shankaracharya himself performed austerity; he conquered desire and anger entirely.
Day and night he held Shankara in meditation; never once did he call upon you.
He did not grasp the secret of your Shakti-form; when Shakti departed, only then his mind repented.
Taking refuge, he proclaimed your fame: 'Victory, victory, victory to Jagadamba Bhavani!'
The primal Mother of the world was pleased; she gave her Shakti without any delay.
O Mother, sorrow surrounds me on every side; who but you can remove my grief?
Craving and desire torment me endlessly; destroy all my delusion and pride.
Destroy my enemies, O great queen; I fix my mind on you alone, Bhavani.
Show mercy, O compassionate Mother; grant well-being, blessing me with prosperity and success.
As long as I live, may I obtain the fruit of your grace; may I always proclaim your fame.
Whoever daily sings this Durga Chalisa attains every joy and the supreme state.
Devidasa, knowing you alone as his refuge — show mercy, O Jagadamba Bhavani.
