akhaṃḍa jñāna svarupa, nirmala manuṣya ākṛti sākṣāta paramātmā jinake mastaka para ratna-jaḍa़ita śveta mukuṭa tathā śveta vastroṃ se suśobhita aura motiyoṃ kī mālā se viśeṣa vibhūṣita hṛdaya siṃhāsana para virājamāna, bhaktoṃ ko varadāna dene vāle, prasanna hai mukhāraviṃda jinakā aise jo śrī sadguru hai, tinako maiṃ namaskāra karatā hū~|
I bow to the revered Satguru — the very embodiment of unbroken knowledge, of pure human form, the Supreme Being made manifest, whose head is adorned with a jewel-studded white crown and white garments, who is seated in glory upon the throne of the heart, further adorned with a garland of pearls, who grants boons to devotees, and whose lotus face shines with joy.
shloka
satyaṃ bodhamayaṃ nararūpa mamlaṃ pratyakṣa sarveśvaram| ratnairmaṇita śīrṣa śubhra mukuṭaṃ śvetāṃbaraiḥ śobhitaṃ||
Truth itself, embodiment of wisdom, of spotless human form, the Lord of all made directly visible; his auspicious crown is set with jewels upon his head, and he is resplendent in garments of white.
muktā māla vibhūṣitaṃ ca hṛdayaṃ siṃhāsane saṃsthitaṃ| bhaktānāṃ varadama prasanna vadanaṃ śrī sadguru naumyaham||
Adorned with a garland of pearls, seated upon the throne of the heart, granting boons to devotees, his countenance ever joyful — I bow again and again to the revered Satguru.
doha
bandau~ caraṇa saroja guru, muda maṃgala āgāra| jehi sevata nara hota hai, bhavasāgara se pāra||
I worship the lotus feet of the Guru, the abode of joy and auspiciousness; by serving them a man crosses over the ocean of worldly existence.
guru jī ke simarana-mātra se, nāśata vighna anaṃta| tāte sarvārambha meṃ, dhyāvata hai saba saṃta||
By the mere remembrance of the Guru, countless obstacles are destroyed; therefore, at the start of every undertaking, all saints meditate upon him.
chaupai
guru-guru kahī saba viśva pukāre, guru soi jo bhrama nivāre| bahuta guru hai asa jaga māhiṃ, hare dravya bhava duḥkha kou nāṃhi||
The whole world calls out 'Guru, Guru,' but he alone is the true guru who removes delusion. There are many who bear the name of guru in this world, yet not one of them can take away the sorrow of worldly bondage.
pākhaṃḍī pāpī avicārī, nāstika kuṭila vṛti bakadhārī| abhimānī niṃdaka śaṭha naṭakhaṭa, durācāra yuta abalā lampaṭa||
Hypocrites, sinners, the thoughtless, atheists of crooked disposition who talk like cranes pretending piety; the arrogant, the slanderer, the wicked and mischievous, those given to bad conduct and lust for women.
krodhī krūra kutarka vivādī, lobhī samatā rahita viṣādī| asa guru kabahū~ bhūli na kīje, inako dūrahi se taji dīje||
The wrathful, the cruel, the quarrelsome sophist, the greedy, those without equanimity and given to despair — such a one should never, even by mistake, be accepted as guru; such persons should be shunned from a distance.
nigamāgama rahasya ke jñātā, nispṛha-hita anuśāsana dātā| dayā kṣamā saṃtoṣa saṃyuktā, parama vicāravāna bhavamuktā||
One who knows the secrets of the scriptures and the Vedas and Agamas, who is free of desire and grants discipline for the good of all, who is endowed with compassion, forgiveness and contentment, of supreme discernment and freed from worldly bondage —
lobha-moha mada-matsara ādi, rahita sadā paramārthavādī| rāga-dveṣa duḥkha dvanda nivāri, rahe akhaṃḍa satyavratadhārī||
ever free from greed, delusion, pride and envy, ever devoted to the highest truth; who has cast off attachment, aversion, sorrow and the pairs of opposites, and remains unbroken in his vow of truth —
bhadra-veśa mudrā ati suṃdara, gati apāra mati dharama-dhurandhara| kṛpyā bhaktana para kara prīti, yathā śāstra sikhave śubha nīti||
of gracious bearing and exceedingly beautiful countenance, of boundless conduct and intellect that upholds dharma; who out of compassion bears love for devotees and, as the scriptures teach, imparts auspicious conduct — such a one is the true Guru.
doha
jinake svapanehū~ krodha ura kabahū~ na hota praveśa| madhura vacana kahiṃ prītiyuta, deta sabahiṃ upadeśa||
One into whose heart anger never enters, even in dream; who speaks sweet, affectionate words and gives instruction to all.
chaupai
hare abodha bodhaprada jana ke, nāśe śoka kleśa jīvana ke| kṛtyākṛtya vikṛtya karma ko, nyāyānyāya adharma dharma ko||
He removes the ignorance of the unenlightened and grants understanding to his disciples; he destroys the sorrow and affliction of life; he shows what is to be done, what is not to be done, and what is a distortion of action —
vividha bhāṃti niścaya karavāī, bhinna-bhinna saba bheda lakhāī| satya mithyā vastu parakhāveṃ, sugati-kugati mārga darśāve||
and in many ways brings certainty, revealing every distinction clearly; he makes truth and falsehood discernible, and shows the path to good and evil destinies.
tehi guru kī śaraṇāgati līje, tana-mana-dhana saba arpaṇa kīje| asana vasana vāhana aru bhūṣaṇa, suta dārā nija paricārakagaṇa||
Take refuge in such a Guru, and offer to him body, mind and all wealth — food, clothing, vehicle and ornaments, one's children, spouse, and one's own attendants.
kari saba bheṃṭa guru ke āge, bhakti-bhāva ura meṃ anurāge| tana yātrā nirvāha ke kāraṇa, māṃge deya so kīje dhāraṇa||
Having offered everything before the Guru, let devotion and love arise in the heart; and for the sustenance of the body's journey, accept only what he gives when asked.
le bhikṣuka sama dīnabhāva mana, kare praṇāma danḍavat caranana| mahāyajña ko phala vaha pāve, sukṛta vaṃda guru śīśa nivāve||
Taking on a humble mind like a beggar, one should offer prostration at his feet; such a one attains the fruit of a great sacrifice, and by this virtuous act bows his head to the Guru.
doha
yahī vidhi guru kī śaraṇa hoya, kare nirantara seva| guru sama jāne aura nahīṃ, tribhuvana meṃ koī deva||
This is the way to take refuge in the Guru — to serve him without ceasing; know that there is no deity anywhere in the three worlds equal to the Guru.
chaupai
jina guru ko mānuṣa kari jāne, tina sama ko nirbhāgya ayāne| buddhi-rahita nara paśu samānā, hai pratyakṣa bina puchcha viṣānā||
Those who consider the Guru to be a mere man — who is as unfortunate and unwise as they? A man without such understanding is like an animal, plainly so, lacking only a tail and horns.
viśva viśeṣa vidita prabhutāī, govinda se guru kī hai bhāī| govinda kī māyā vaśa prāṇī, bhugateṃ duḥkha caurāsī khānī||
It is well known throughout the world that the glory of the Guru is akin to that of Govind himself; yet under the sway of Govind's maya, beings suffer the pains of the eighty-four hundred thousand forms of life.
guru pratāpa bhava mūla vināśe, vimala buddhi hoya jñāna prakāśe| sukha akhaṃḍa nara bhoge jāī, satyaloka meṃ vāsā pāī||
The Guru's grace destroys the very root of worldly existence; the intellect becomes pure and knowledge is illumined; a man goes on to enjoy unbroken happiness and attains abode in Satyalok.
guru se śreṣṭha aura jaga māhīṃ, hari viraṃci śaṃkara koṭha nāhīṃ| suhṛda bandhu suta pitu mahatārī, guru sama ko dūjā hitakārī||
There is none in this world greater than the Guru — not Hari, not Virinchi, not Shankar. Among well-wishers, kin, children, father and mother, none is a benefactor equal to the Guru.
doha
jāṃke rakṣaka guru dhanī, sake kahi kari aura| hari rūṭhe guru śaraṇa hai, guru rūṭhe nahīṃ ṭhaura||
One whose protector is the Guru, of him what more need be said? If Hari is displeased, the Guru's refuge remains; but if the Guru is displeased, there is no refuge at all.
chaupai
yoga yajña japa tapa vyavahārā, niyama dharma saṃyama ācārā| veda purāṇa kahe gaurāī, guru bina saba niṣphala hai bhāī||
Yoga, sacrifice, japa, austerity and worldly conduct, rules, dharma, discipline and practice — the Vedas and Puranas proclaim with one voice that all these are fruitless, brother, without a Guru.
guru bina hṛdaya śuddha na hoī, koṭi upāya kare jo koī| guru bina jñāna vicāra na āve, guru bina koī na mukti pāve||
Without a Guru the heart is not purified, however many millions of methods one may try; without a Guru understanding of true knowledge does not arise, and without a Guru none attains liberation.
guru bina bhūta preta tana dhārī, bhrame sahasra varṣa nara-nārī| guru bina yama ke hātha bikāī, pāya duḥsaha duḥkha mana pachitāī||
Without a Guru, men and women wander for a thousand years bearing the bodies of ghosts and spirits; without a Guru one is sold into the hands of Yama, and suffers unbearable pain, repenting in the heart.
guru bina saṃśaya kauna nivāre, hṛdaya viveka kauna vidhi dhāre| guru bina nahīṃ ajñāna vināśe, nahiṃ nija ātma rūpa prakāśe||
Without a Guru, who removes doubt? By what means does discernment enter the heart? Without a Guru ignorance is never destroyed, nor is one's own true form revealed.
guru bina brahmajñāna jo gāve, so nahīṃ mukti padārtha pāve| tehi kāraṇa niścaya guru kīje, sura durlabha tana khoe na dīje||
One who sings of the knowledge of Brahman without a Guru does not attain the treasure of liberation; for this reason one should surely take a Guru, and not let this human body, rare even for gods, go to waste.
doha
veda śāstra aru bhāgavata, gītā paḍha़e jo koya| tīna kāla saṃtuṣṭa mana, bina guru kṛpā na hoya||
Whether one reads the Vedas and scriptures, the Bhagavata, or the Gita, the mind's satisfaction in all three times of life does not come without the Guru's grace.

akhila vividha jaga meṃ adhikārī, vyāsa vasiṣṭha mahān ācārī| gautama kapila kaṇāda pātanjali, jaiminī bālmīkī caranana bali||
Authorities across the whole diverse world — Vyas, Vasishtha, the great and wise; Gautam, Kapil, Kanad, Patanjali, Jaimini, Valmiki — I offer myself at their feet.
yaha saba guru kī śaraṇī āe, tāte jaga meṃ śreṣṭha kahāye| yājñavalkya aru janaka videhī, dattātreya guru parama snehī||
All these took refuge in a Guru, and thereby became renowned as the finest in the world; Yajnavalkya and Janak Videhi, and Dattatreya, the Guru's most beloved devotee.
caubīsa guru kīnheṃ jaga māhīṃ, ahaṃkāra ura rākhyo nāhīṃ| ambarīṣa prahalāda vibhīṣaṇa, ityādi jo bhaye bhaktajana||
In this world twenty-four gurus were taken up, yet no pride was kept in the heart; Ambarish, Prahlad, Vibhishan, and other such devotees as these.
aura huṃ yati tapī banavāsī, yaha saba guru ke parama upāsī| harī viraṃci śiva dīkṣā līnā, nārada dhīmara ko guru kīnā||
And other ascetics, tapasvis and forest-dwellers too — all these were supreme worshippers of a Guru; Hari, Virinchi and Shiva themselves took initiation, and Narad made a fisherman his Guru.
jo kucha śreṣṭha padārtha pāve, so guru caraṇana āni caḍha़āve| guru kī adbhuta hai prabhutāī, mile sahasra guṇā hoya āī||
Whatever excellent thing one may obtain, let it be brought and offered at the Guru's feet; wondrous is the glory of the Guru — what is given returns a thousandfold.
kiye yathāvidhi guru kī pūjā, śeṣa rahe kartavya na dūjā| prabala pāpa nāśeṃ saba tana ke, hoya manoratha pūrṇa mana ke||
One who has duly worshipped the Guru has no other duty remaining; all the powerful sins of the body are destroyed, and the heart's desires are fulfilled.
jo guru ko bhojana karavāve, mānahu trilokahiṃ nyota jimāve||
One who feeds the Guru a meal, know that it is as though he has feasted all three worlds.
doha
guru kī mahimā hai amita, kahi na sake śruti śeṣa| jinakī kṛpā kaṭākṣa te, raṃkahuṃ hota nareśa||
The glory of the Guru is boundless; even Shesha with his thousand tongues cannot fully describe it. By the mere sidelong glance of his grace, a pauper becomes a king.
chaupai
asa prabhāva hai dūsara kehimā, jasa kachu hai sadguru kī mahimā| sarva siddhi-prada ati vara dāyaka, duḥkha saṃkaṭa meṃ parama sahāyaka||
No other power compares to this — such indeed is the glory of the true Guru; he bestows all accomplishments and grants supreme boons, and is the highest help amid sorrow and calamity.
nitya uṭha pāṭha kare jo koī, sakala pāpa kṣaya tāṃke hoī| cita ciṃtā saṃtāpa vināśe, sukha sampatti aiśvarya prakāśe||
Whoever daily rises and recites this, all his sins are destroyed; anxieties and afflictions of the mind are dispelled, and happiness, prosperity and glory shine forth.
mahāvyādhi jvara ādi nivārī, deya akāla mṛtyu bhaya ṭārī| lahahiṃ sakala sukha je jaga kere, kabahu~ daridra na āve nere||
He wards off great disease, fever and the like, and removes the fear of untimely death; such a one obtains all the joys that this world holds, and poverty never comes near him.
hoya alabhya lābha mārga meṃ, pāve māna pratiṣṭhā jaga meṃ| parama mantra yaha akhila phalaprada, haraṇa sakala bhava janma-maraṇa gada||
Unattainable gains come his way, and he attains honour and standing in the world; this is the supreme mantra, fruitful in every way, that removes all the suffering of birth and death.
śraddhāvāna bhakta lakha līje, tāko yaha guru mahimā dīje| parama rahasya gūḍha़ yaha jānī, kahe na sabahiṃ prasiddha bakhānī||
Recognize the devotee who is full of faith, and to him alone impart this glory of the Guru; know this to be a deep and hidden secret, not to be proclaimed openly to all.
doha
dhanya mātu pitu dhanya hai, dhanya suhṛda anurakta| dhanya grāma vaha jānie, jaha~ janme guru bhakta||
Blessed are the mother and father, blessed the loving well-wisher, blessed indeed is that village where a devotee of the Guru is born.
bhakti prabhāva miṭī sakala, dharmadāsa kī pīra| koṭi janma ke puṇya se, sadguru mile kabīra||
By the power of devotion, all the suffering of Dharmadas was erased; through the merit of countless births, Kabir found the true Satguru.
chaupai
saṃta mahanta sādhu hai jete, guru pada paṃkaja sevahiṃ tete| śeṣa sahasra mukha bahu guṇa gāve, guru mahimā ko pāra na pāve||
As many as are the saints, the great and the holy, all of them serve the lotus feet of the Guru; even Shesha with his thousand mouths, singing his many virtues, cannot find the limit of the Guru's glory.
doha
rāma kṛṣṇa se ko baḍa़ā, tinhūṃ to guru kīna| tīna loka ke ve dhanī, guru āge adhīna||
Who is greater than Ram and Krishna? Yet even they took a Guru; though masters of the three worlds, before the Guru they remained submissive.
chaupai
tapa vidyā ke kari abhimānā, pāya lakṣmī sampatti nānā| jo nahiṃ guru ko mastaka nāve, so nara ajagara ko tana pāve||
One who, taking pride in austerity and learning, gains wealth and manifold prosperity, but does not bow his head before the Guru — that man attains the body of a python.
nija mukha jo guru niṃdā karahīṃ, kalpa sahasra naraka meṃ parahīṃ| guru kī niṃdā sune jo koī, rāsabha śvāna janma tehi hoī||
Those who with their own mouth slander the Guru fall into hell for a thousand kalpas; whoever listens to slander of the Guru is born as a donkey or a dog.
guru se ahaṃkāra ura dhārī, kare vivāda mūḍha़ avicārī| te nara maru nirjala bana jāī, tṛṣita mare rākṣasa tana pāī||
One who, harboring pride in his heart against the Guru, argues with him foolishly and without thought — such a man dies of thirst in a waterless desert, taking on the body of a demon.
jo guru ko taja aurahi dhyāve, hoya daridrī ati duḥkha pāve| bina darśana nahiṃ guru ke rahiye, yaha dṛḍha़ niyama hṛdaya meṃ gahiye||
One who forsakes the Guru and meditates on another becomes destitute and suffers greatly; one should never remain without seeing the Guru — hold this firm rule in the heart.
jo binu darśana kare ahārā, hoya vyādhi tana vividha prakārā| yathāśakti jana cuke nāhīṃ, hoya aśakta doṣa nahiṃ tāhī||
One who takes food without first having the Guru's darshan falls into various kinds of illness in the body; but one who has tried according to his ability and yet fails through no fault of his own is not to blame.
guru sammukha nahiṃ baiṭhe jāī, khālī hātha hilāvata āī| jo kachu aura nahīṃ bana āve, patra puṣpa phala bheṃṭa caḍha़āve||
One should never go and sit before the Guru empty-handed, arriving with idle hands; if nothing else can be managed, offer at least a leaf, a flower or a fruit.
doha
namra bhāva ati prītiyuta, caraṇa kamala sira nāya| jo sadguru ājñā kare, līje śīśa caḍha़āya||
With humility and deep love, bowing the head to his lotus feet, whatever the Satguru commands, accept it and place it upon your own head.
chaupai
ati adhīna hoya bole vāṇī, raṃka samāna jori juga pānī| kabahu~ na baiṭhe pā~va pasārī, jaṃghā pada dhara āsana mārī||
Speak with utmost humility, joining both hands like a pauper; never sit with legs stretched out, but sit with thighs and feet drawn in, in proper posture.
Do not walk away while facing him; do not even set foot upon the Guru's shadow. Keep no secret hidden from him even slightly, and never speak with deceit, cunning or falsehood.
Accept his word as equal to the Vedic mantras, and know the Guru to be equal to the Supreme Self; do not weigh it as true or false — accept all that the Guru says as authoritative.
