Overview
Vighnahar Temple (also called Vigneshwara Temple) in Ozar, near Junnar, is one of the eight Ashtavinayak shrines and the only one among them featuring a golden dome (Sonyacha Kalash) and pinnacle, a distinctive architectural feature tied directly to its Peshwa-era patronage.
History
The present temple structure dates to the Peshwa era, generally given as 1785 CE. Chimaji Appa, brother and military commander of Peshwa Baji Rao I, is credited with renovating the temple and covering its shikhara (spire) with gold following his 1739 capture of Vasai Fort from the Portuguese, connecting the temple's most distinctive feature directly to a specific documented military victory. The temple was further rebuilt in 1967 under Appashastri Joshi.
Spiritual Significance
The Ganesha form worshipped here, Vigneshwara ("Lord of obstacles") or Vighnahar ("Remover of obstacles"), is associated with the legend of Ganesha's defeat of the demon Vignasura, who is said to have disrupted sacred rituals and good deeds across the universe by creating constant obstacles; Ganesha's victory over this specific demon gives the deity his name and role here as protector against obstruction more broadly.
