Krishna's Major Temples Beyond Braj

Deity: Krishna

Overview

This platform's existing Krishna/Braj cluster covers Mathura and Vrindavan's core sites, and its Char Dham cluster separately covers Dwarka. This overview brings together three further major Krishna temples that stand outside those clusters, each anchoring a distinct regional and philosophical tradition: Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple (Kerala), the "Dwarka of the South"; Udupi Sri Krishna Matha (Karnataka), seat of the Dvaita Vedanta tradition founded by Madhvacharya; and Shrinathji Temple, Nathdwara (Rajasthan), seat of the Pushtimarg tradition founded by Vallabhacharya. This list reflects an editorial judgement about which remaining Krishna temples are most nationally significant; it is not exhaustive.

History

Each of the three temples has its own distinct historical basis and founding tradition, detailed on their individual pages, spanning roughly the 13th to 17th centuries CE for their present institutional forms.

Spiritual Significance

Together, these three sites illustrate how devotion to Krishna in India has developed into several distinct regional and philosophical schools beyond the Braj/Vrindavan and Dwarka traditions: Kerala's Guruvayur tradition, Karnataka's Dvaita Vedanta (Udupi), and Rajasthan's Pushtimarg (Nathdwara), each with its own theology, ritual practice, and devotional literature.
