Meaning
Mother, ever the giver of bliss, You are famed for granting boons and fearlessness.
Victory to You, ocean of beauty, mother of the world; remover of every sin, dispeller of worldly fear.
Your countenance is white and Your garment too is white; saints, sages and seers serve at Your feet.
Mother, sovereign ruler of the ancient city of Kashi; O Maheshwari, savior of the entire world.
Mounted on the bull, known as Rudrani, wanderer through the universe, victory to You, O bringer of welfare.
Crown jewel among the truly devoted wives, O daughter of the mountain (Himalaya), You attained that exalted rank.
Unable to bear the sorrow of separation from Your husband, You then burned Your body in the fire of yoga.
As You gave up Your body, love for Shiva's feet remained; that love stayed with You into the household of the Himalaya.
You appeared anew and were given the name Girija; great joy filled that household.
Then Narad guided You, teaching You the discipline needed to secure marriage to Shiva.
Brahma, Varuna and Kubera were named, and Indra (lord of the gods) and others too were spoken of and praised.
Having recounted the glorious fame of all these gods, Narad resolved in his heart to test and turn Your intention.
You, blessed one, remained unmoved in Your vow; O daughter of Himachal, You fulfilled Your resolve.
Narad himself then grew anxious; he then taught You the mantra to fulfil Your vow.
He instructed You to perform austerities, and You proved the saint's words true.
Hearing the voice from the sky, You did not waver though urged aside; then Brahma came into Your presence.
He said, "O daughter, ask for a matchless boon; today I shall grant according to Your wish."
You performed extraordinary, immense austerity; though most delicate, You bore great hardship.
"Now, setting aside all doubt, ask something of me; I swear there is no deceit toward You."
"Know Me as Brahma, knower of the Vedas; accept these My words as true."
"Set aside all hesitation and speak Your wish; I shall grant the boon just as You desire."
Hearing Brahma's sweet words, Bhavani smiled a little.
She said, "What are You saying, O Creator? You Yourself are the maker and sustainer of the world."
"My desire is not hidden from You; what do You wish to make me say?"
"When I died in Daksha's sacrifice, I resolved that Shambhu (Shiva) alone would become mine again."
"May that beloved one now unite with me" — saying "so be it," Brahma departed for his abode.
Then, O Girija, Shankar became Yours; the fruit of Your desire was attained and all doubt vanished.
The radiance of millions of moons and millions of suns dwells within Your countenance.
A rosary and a book adorn one hand, a goad another; in Your remaining hand a noose captivates the mind.
O Annapurna, ever full; unborn, faultless, infinitely complete.
O Mother, ocean of compassion, bestower of well-being; Mother, filled with worldly splendor and bliss.
Lotus-eyed, with a radiant forehead; O Goddess Kalika, O fierce Chandi.
You, O Girija, dwell in Kailash, reveling in bliss together with Sindhuja.
In heaven You are called Mahalakshmi; in the mortal world You attained the station of Lakshmi.
You dwell within all as the form of everything; the kings of the immortal realm serve You.
Whoever recites this Chalisa of Yours shall obtain auspicious fruit, with Ish (Shiva) Himself as witness.
Whoever recites it at dawn with a focused mind shall gain devotion and abundant spiritual refinement.
Together with wife, husband, friends and sons, one obtains wondrous, supreme prosperity.
You grant kingship even to one deprived of it; Your glory increases the good fame of Your devotee.
This recitation grants great joy and auspiciousness; the devotee obtains the treasure his heart desires.
