Venkateswara Ji (Balaji)

Venkateswara, widely known as Balaji, is a form of Vishnu worshipped atop the Tirumala hills in Andhra Pradesh, believed to have appeared on earth to protect humanity through the trials of Kali Yuga.

He is called Balaji, Govinda and Srinivasa, names used interchangeably by devotees across the temple's vast following, alongside the formal name Venkateswara, "Lord of Venkata (hill)."

His principal image at Tirumala stands richly ornamented, adorned in gold and jewels, in the standard iconography of Vishnu bearing the conch and discus, but the specific image and its ornamentation at Tirumala are themselves treated as uniquely sacred rather than interchangeable with other Vishnu images.

Tradition traces the temple's development from around 300 CE, with successive dynasties, the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and especially the Vijayanagara rulers, expanding and endowing it over the centuries; devotional legend holds Venkateswara descended to Tirumala specifically to shelter and guide devotees through the hardships of the current cosmic age.

Worshipped as a form of Vishnu; devotional tradition associates him with Padmavati as consort, whose own temple stands nearby at Tiruchanur.

The Tirumala temple is the wealthiest and most visited Hindu temple in India, drawing an estimated twenty to twenty-five million pilgrims a year, with the tonsure ritual and the temple's laddu prasadam among its best-known devotional customs.

While Tirumala itself is in Andhra Pradesh, his worship as Balaji or Srinivasa extends across South India and, through the diaspora, to Venkateswara temples built on the same pattern worldwide.
