Khatu Shyam Ji

Khatu Shyam is worshipped at Khatu in Sikar district, Rajasthan, as the divine form taken by Barbarika, a Mahabharata-era warrior granted by Krishna the boon of being venerated in the present age (Kali Yuga) under the name Shyam.

As Barbarika he is grandson of Bhima (son of Bhima's son Ghatotkacha and the princess Maurvi); worshipped he is addressed as Khatu Shyam Ji or Baba Shyam, a title of familiar devotion rather than a name from classical scripture.

He is typically depicted as a youthful warrior, sometimes shown with only his head, in reference to the central legend that follows; devotional imagery frequently emphasises his weapons and archery skill as a mark of the extraordinary valour attributed to him.

Tradition holds that Barbarika, an unmatched archer, vowed before the Kurukshetra war to fight for whichever side was losing, a pledge that threatened to make the outcome unpredictable; Krishna, testing his devotion, asked for his head as an offering, which Barbarika gave willingly. In reward for this ultimate sacrifice, Krishna granted the severed head the boon of witnessing the entire war and blessed him to be worshipped in the coming age as Shyam.

Son of Ghatotkacha (himself the son of Bhima and Hidimba) and the princess Maurvi, placing him within the wider Pandava lineage as Bhima's grandson.

His temple, said to have first been built in 1027 CE by the local ruler Roop Singh Chauhan, draws millions of devotees annually, especially during the Phalguna Mela, when large crowds undertake the Nishaan Yatra, carrying sacred triangular flags on foot from Reengus to Khatu.

His cult is concentrated in Rajasthan but draws pilgrims from across North India, and Khatu Shyam devotional songs and bhajans are now widely circulated well beyond the immediate region of his temple.
