Overview
Suryanar Kovil, near Aduthurai between Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, is the anchor temple of the Navagraha Sthalams, the set of nine temples across the Kumbakonam-Mayiladuthurai region, each dedicated to one of the nine Navagraha (planetary deities). Suryanar Kovil is the only standalone temple among the nine dedicated specifically to Surya, and uniquely also contains subsidiary shrines to all eight of the other Navagraha deities within its own complex, arranged facing the central Surya shrine.
History
The present masonry structure is generally dated to the reign of the Chola king Kulottunga Choladeva (1060-1118 CE), in the 11th century, with later additions made during the Vijayanagara period. The temple features a five-tiered rajagopuram (entrance tower) and a rectangular compound layout, with the central Surya shrine raised on an elevated platform.
Spiritual Significance
According to temple legend, the sage Kalava suffered from severe ailments, including leprosy, and prayed to the Navagrahas for relief; pleased by his devotion, the nine planetary deities cured him, but Brahma, angered that the planets had exercised powers he felt were not theirs to grant, cursed the Navagrahas themselves with leprosy and banished them to earth at Vellurukku Vanam (a jungle of white wild flowers), the site now occupied by this temple complex. This legend underlies the site's role as the central anchor of the wider Navagraha Sthalams pilgrimage circuit, with devotees typically visiting Suryanar Kovil either first or last when completing all nine temples.
