Overview
Saraswathi Temple in Panachikkad, Kottayam district, Kerala, is one of the state's most significant dedicated Saraswati shrines and is popularly known as the "Mookambika of the South," drawing a comparison to the well-known Mookambika Devi Temple in Karnataka. Unlike many Saraswati temples, which conduct dedicated worship mainly during Navratri, Panachikkad performs continuous daily pooja to the goddess throughout the year.
History
According to the temple's account, recorded in Kottarathil Sankunni's well-known 19th/early-20th century Malayalam work Aithihyamala, the site's history extends back over a thousand years and is traditionally linked to Parasurama, the legendary founder-figure of Kerala, who is said to have ploughed the site's originally rocky terrain to please Goddess Durga, who then blessed the location.
Spiritual Significance
The temple's idol stands within a low-lying, naturally spring-fed area without an overhead roof, giving the impression of the goddess seated amid a small pond; the idol itself is largely covered by creepers and shrubs, whose leaves are devotionally regarded as sacred to Saraswati. The continuous flow of spring water at the goddess's feet, understood to never run dry even in peak summer, is the source of the site's very name — Saraswati, here understood through her association with flowing water (saras).
