Swaminarayan Akshardham, Gandhinagar

Deity: Bhagwan Swaminarayan · Best: October, November, December, January, February, March

Overview

Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is the original Akshardham temple complex, opened to the public in 1992 as a tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and his life and teachings. It served as the design and construction precedent for the later, larger Akshardham complex in Delhi, with much of the team behind the Delhi project having gained direct experience working on this earlier Gandhinagar complex.

History

The complex was inspired by Yogiji Maharaj (1892-1971), the fourth spiritual successor within the BAPS lineage of the Swaminarayan tradition, and was created under the guidance of Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921-2016), his fifth successor. Construction took roughly 13 years, culminating in the complex's opening in 1992.

Spiritual Significance

As with its later Delhi counterpart, the Gandhinagar complex is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830), founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, a Vaishnava-tradition devotional and reform movement originating in Gujarat. The central shrine forms the focal point of the wider complex, with surrounding gardens and exhibition halls giving the site a combined devotional and cultural-educational character, a template later expanded upon at Akshardham Delhi.
