Overview
Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi is a major modern Hindu temple and cultural campus dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. Opened in 2005, it is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in the world and a significant destination combining religious worship with cultural and educational exhibitions.
History
The temple was envisioned as early as 1968 by Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS at the time, and was ultimately built under the guidance of his successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Construction began on 8 November 2000, and the complex was officially opened on 6 November 2005, two days short of a five-year construction period, in a ceremony attended by then-President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, L. K. Advani, and the then-Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, B. L. Joshi.
Spiritual Significance
The complex is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830), founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, a Vaishnava-tradition devotional and reform movement originating in Gujarat. Beyond its central shrine, Akshardham Delhi is notable for combining active worship with an extensive cultural exhibition programme (including boat rides, a large-format film, and a musical fountain show) depicting Indian spiritual and cultural history, giving the complex a distinctive dual identity as both an active place of worship and a major cultural-tourism destination.
