Vaishali and Kundagrama (Basukund)

Deity: Mahavira, the twenty-fourth tirthankara

Overview

Basukund near Vaishali is identified by most scholars, by historians, and by the Indian government as the birthplace of Mahavira, which would make it one of the most important kalyanaka sites in Jainism. Sect: Shared between Digambara and Shvetambara.

History

Mahavira's birth is traditionally placed in the sixth century BCE. Specific traditional dates vary between sources and were not pinned down.

Spiritual Significance

The conception and birth kalyanakas of the last tirthankara are placed here in the mainstream and largely Shvetambara identification. Vaishali itself is independently famous as one of the world's early republics and as a centre of both Jain and Buddhist history.
