Overview
A village about 2.5 km from Nalanda Mahavihara, held by Digambara tradition to be the birthplace of Mahavira, in direct contest with the mainstream identification of Basukund near Vaishali. Sect: Digambara, and contested.
History
The Digambara Uttarapurana refers to Kundpur in the Videha kingdom as the birthplace. That is a textual and traditional claim, and no independent archaeological confirmation was found.
Spiritual Significance
For the Digambara community this is the janma kalyanaka of the last tirthankara, which places it at the very top of Jain sacred geography. The village has its own temples, to Mahavira, Rishabhanatha and others. Do not confuse this Kundalpur with the Kundalpur in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, which is an entirely different and also important site.

Jain temples of this rank commonly prohibit leather articles, restrict photography, and expect bathing before worship.
