Overview
A complex of roughly fourteen Jain temples on Mount Girnar near Junagadh, centred on Neminatha. One of the five Shvetambara Pancha Tirth. Sect: Predominantly Shvetambara, with one or two Digambara temples; the mountain is sacred to both.
History
The main Neminatha temple was completely rebuilt in 1129 CE by Sajjana, a Solanki-era governor, with gilding added in 1364 CE. The tradition of pilgrimage here from before 250 BCE is traditional and not independently evidenced.
Spiritual Significance
Girnar is a kalyanaka site, which puts it in a different category from a temple foundation however grand. Tradition places three of Neminatha's five kalyanakas here: his renunciation at Sahasavan, his attainment of omniscience, and his liberation.
Pilgrimage Information
Getting there and getting in. A long climb, variously given as 3,500 to 4,000 steps from the Bhavnathi foothill. Sources differ on the count. This is a serious ascent and should be started before dawn. Jain temples of this rank commonly prohibit leather articles, restrict photography, and expect bathing before worship. Where this page does not state a restriction, it is because no source documented one for this particular site, not because none applies. Confirm on arrival.
