Meaning
Victory, victory to Chandra Dev, the benefactor of all; victory to Nishakar, the giver of auspicious light in the night.
Because of you, the night receives its beauty; your rays delight the heart.
You arose from the Ocean of Milk (Ksheer Sagar); you are also said to have come as the son of sage Atri.
You are said to be born of a portion of Vishnu's left eye; your form brings delight to the whole world.
White in hue, you ride a chariot yoked with ten horses, wandering the sky as the path for all.
With your nectar-like rays you captivate the mind; you take away everyone's suffering.
When you rise in the sky, the flowers and creepers all rejoice.
All creatures find happiness, as cool gentle breezes ripple through.
You are the lord of the twenty-seven nakshatras (lunar mansions); you are indeed the great lord among all the gods.
You are the master endowed with sixteen kalas (phases), the inner indweller who wanes and waxes.
Whenever you become full, various festivals are then celebrated.
When Rahu overtakes you, the world calls it a total (lunar) eclipse.
All vratas (vows/fasts) are observed only because of you; without you, they would all be fruitless.
You are the lord of the forest of medicinal herbs; without you, all seekers of results/fruit labour in vain.
Because of you the rainy season comes about; your kala (power/phase) makes the grain grow.
Crops gain their strength from you; greenery spreads across the earth.
You are dear to the ancestors (pitras); through you everyone's fortune is shaped and adorned.
O Deva, you are the lord of the mind; gods, men, and sages all render service to you.
Beloved of Rohini, our deva, remove all our troubles and calamities.
Whoever chants your name, you take away all their sorrow.
Whether sick or poor, you take away all their lament.
On whomever your grace falls, no great calamity can overcome them.
The person who chants the Chandra mantra attains the entire wealth of happiness.
Whoever is under your dasha (planetary period), has no heavy worry to bear.
Whoever observes the Monday (Somvar) vrat, you take away all their suffering.
With white flowers, unbroken rice grains, curd and dried fruits, all offer their service to you.
Whoever reads or recites this Chalisa attains all happiness and the supreme abode.
Listen to the humble tale of the poet 'Lakhi'; victory, victory to Chandra Dev, the treasury of happiness.
