Sapta Rishi

The Saptarishi, "seven sages," are the seven great seers extolled across the Vedas and Puranas as the foundational teachers of Vedic knowledge, worshipped together each year on Rishi Panchami.

The earliest formal listing, in the Jaiminiya Brahmana, names them as Agastya, Atri, Bharadvaja, Gautama, Jamadagni, Vasishtha and Vishvamitra; a differently composed later list used for Rishi Panchami worship instead names Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vasishtha, the two lists overlapping but not identical.

They are not typically given individual sculpted temple images as a set; instead their presence is marked astronomically, the seven stars of what Western astronomy calls the Big Dipper or Plough, within Ursa Major, are named for them (in one traditional list Vasishtha, Marichi, Pulastya, Pulaha, Atri, Angiras and Kratu) and are pointed to as their visible sign in the night sky.

Each rishi carries his own extensive Puranic biography, as author, teacher or ancestor figure, but their collective significance rests on their shared role as the primeval transmitters of Vedic knowledge to humanity, a role renewed in each cosmic age (manvantara), which is said to have its own distinct set of seven sages.

On Rishi Panchami, Arundhati, wife of Vasishtha, is venerated alongside the seven sages, the only spouse formally included in the day's worship, reflecting her own renown for exemplary devotion.

Rishi Panchami falls on the fifth day of Bhadrapada, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi, and is observed, especially by women, with the ritual worship of the seven sages using betel leaves, flowers, camphor and a lamp, traditionally as an act of atonement for ritual lapses over the preceding year.

The observance is followed across North and Western India, with the precise rituals and the exact seven names invoked varying somewhat between regional and family traditions.
