Shri Sai Baba Temple, Shirdi

Sai Baba is recorded as having arrived in Shirdi around 1858, initially living on the village outskirts and later under a neem tree at a spot now called Gurusthan, before settling in an abandoned mosque that became known as Dwarkamai. He died on 15 October 1918, coinciding with Vijayadashami, and was interred at Buti Wada in Shirdi, a site subsequently developed into the present Samadhi Mandir. Construction was initiated by Shreemant Gopalrao Buti, a wealthy devotee from Nagpur, who had originally envisioned the building as a residential mansion (wada) for Baba during his lifetime; significant expansion of the temple complex followed in the 1950s and 1960s.

Sai Baba's teachings centred on a moral code emphasising love, forgiveness, charity, contentment, inner peace, and devotion to both God and one's guru, articulated without exclusive attachment to any single religious tradition. This inclusive, syncretic character has made Shirdi a symbol of interfaith unity, drawing devotees from diverse religious backgrounds, a distinctive devotional identity setting it apart from most other sites on this platform.

Sai Baba's teachings are documented primarily through the Shri Sai Satcharita, a biographical and devotional text compiled by his devotee Govind Raghunath Dabholkar (Hemadpant), rather than classical Puranic scripture. Specific citation requires expert verification before publication.
